How essential are morals?

During the process, the competition to reach the offshore, there are no laws. Equality and fairness depend entirely on the morals and ethical values each individual has and whether or not they choose to uphold those standards. There is a significant character development between the characters Marco and Rafael. However, not all character development is good. Chaos arises and a voice of reason becomes essential for survival. This next task results in eliminating a significant number of contestants because only 9% can move forward in the process. This not only leads to elimination for most of the contestants but also death. Despite there not being laws, morals may be enough to save the 3%.

The contestants were desperate for a solution after being locked in a storage unit with no food or water. Marco is the only contestant who could understand, direct, and lead the task. There was a pattern displayed on the screen that consisted of 0’s and 1’s, the numbers indicated that they must pull down a series of levers in each room in a specific order. Every time they completed that task, the leaders sent down enough food and water for one person. After arguing, the contestants decided that they will go in alphabetical order and repeat the task enough times where each person will get their share. Eventually, the leaders of the process stop sending food once they realize each participant is cooperating properly. The contestants all agreed to stop after feeling helpless despite Marco’s anger, and the leaders then decide to release the rest of the food. Michele split the food evenly and everyone seems to be content. However, Marco and a group of guys including Rafael rebel against the rest of the contestants. They stole everyone’s food and killed anyone who was not compliant. Marco’s character development was the most apparent, he turned from productive and considerate to power-hungry suddenly. Marco always seemed to be a kind and understanding individual but easily turned dark because he believed that is what he needed to do in order to succeed. However, Rafael stood up against him which was out of character compared to his previous behavior in other episodes. Rafael’s previous actions and words displayed that deception and manipulation are essential for success. However, once he realized Marco was willing to go through any length to win, he quickly realized that killing innocent people was too far.

The two characters who appeared to be one way completely altered their behaviors based on the tasks of the process. Therefore, the process can either bring out the worst or the best in people. Despite there being no laws, Rafael was able to put his morals first by fighting for the right thing and saving innocent people. Marco's recklessness resulted in his death therefore maybe deceit and manipulation are not the only traits needed to survive the process. Empathy, morals, and ethics are also essential to reach the offshore. It seems that an individual needs to be balanced and well-rounded enough to know what traits to use at what times.
